A beautiful, early 20th-century cast iron cat doorstop manufactured by the renowned  Hubley Manufacturing Company  of Lancaster, Pennsylvania. This highly collectible piece was designed by celebrated American illustrator  Grace Drayton  (famous for the  Campbell’s Soup Kids ), featuring her signature whimsical, wide-eyed look. Often misidentified as a "cat on a pumpkin," this design actually depicts a stylized black cat sitting upright on a rounded, tufted cushion or pillow base.  Still a nice "Halloween" decoration! This is an antique (Not a 1970s Replica): ·          Impressed Mold Markings:  The reverse features sharply  impressed (sunken)  markings reading  "1720"  and the foundry batch code  "ZR 81"  Modern reproductions feature  raised  or blurry text, and usually lack the smaller "ZR" code entirely. ·          The Drayton Eyes:  The factory paint detail is wonderfully preserved, showing the cat looking dramatically up and to its right. The mold features the crisp, sunken vertical cat-eye iris that allowed factory artists to perfectly align the glance.   Dimensions & Weight: ·          Height:  Approx. 7.75" to 8" ·          Width:  Approx. 6" ·          Weight:  Heavy iron casting (approx. 4.6 lbs unboxed)   Condition: ·          Paint:   Very Good Original Condition.  A remarkably high percentage of the original factory paint is intact. The face and eyes are beautifully defined. ·          Wear:  Features honest, uniform edge chipping and light abrasions consistent with 100+ years of careful domestic enjoyment. There are no cracks, breaks, modern welds, or paint touch-ups. ·          Base:  Many years ago, a previous owner added a protective layer of felt to the bottom to safeguard hardwood floors. Important Note:  To preserve the original antique paint and avoid flaking, this doorstop has not been cleaned or dusted .
