The embroidery is entirely hand-worked in satin and long-and-short stitch, with softly graded shading through the birds’ bodies and finely couched twisted silk for the stems and leaf veins. Backed with a gold-yellow silk lining. Antique hand-embroidered silk panel depicting two white herons among lotus leaves, buds and reeds, worked in flat floss silk on a red crepe-weave ground. Made between 1890 and 1920 The embroidery is entirely hand-worked in satin and long-and-short stitch, with softly graded shading through the birds’ bodies and finely couched twisted silk for the stems and leaf veins. The central panel is bound in pale blue silk and framed by a black sayagata damask border — an interlocking key-fret pattern with scattered chrysanthemum sprays — cut in strips and mitred at the corners in traditional mounting fashion. Backed with a gold-yellow silk lining. The verso bears an oval purple retailer’s stamp and cloth label from a Hong Kong trading company with a Kowloon arcade address, indicating the piece passed through the Hong Kong trade. The label is partially legible and is photographed in the listing. Housed in its older gilt wood frame with notched corner ornaments, mauve mat, and glass. The panel was removed from the frame for inspection and photography, then reinstalled. Measurements: Frame 16.5 x 13.5 in. Sight/panel 10 x 12.5 in. Condition: Good antique condition with honest wear. Splits and fraying to the pale blue silk binding at several corners, with the dark backing visible at those points. Scattered light soiling and loose fibers. Tonal variation to the red ground. The frame shows gilt loss, rubbing, and separation at one corner joint.
