View Antique 12" Wooden Rule Ruler c1880-1915 Unusual 1/4" Graduations Incised Lines with current marketplace pricing, condition, product images and item details. Close examination reveals an interesting combination of marking techniques. The black graduation lines then continue farther across the face as surface-applied markings. Age: Based upon its construction, marking techniques, typography and comparison with period wooden rules, I believe this example most likely dates from thelate 19th to early 20th century, tentatively circa 1880–1915. Antique 12-Inch Wooden Rule – Unusual 1/4-Inch Graduations Offered here is a very unusual early wooden measuring rule with substantial age and an excellent untouched surface and patina. The rule measures approximately 12 inches long × 1 inch wide × 1/8 inch thick . Width varies slightly from approximately .990" to 1.008", consistent with age, wear and the natural movement of the wood. Unlike the more commonly encountered woodworking rules graduated in eighths or sixteenths, this example is graduated only in 1/4-inch increments . Close examination reveals an interesting combination of marking techniques. The graduation marks are physically incised into the wood for approximately the first 1/4 inch from the measuring edge . The black graduation lines then continue farther across the face as surface-applied markings. The long horizontal line running beneath the numerals is also clearly incised into the wood . The numerals themselves appear to be surface-applied rather than incised. The reverse is completely plain, and I have found no maker's name, trademark or other identification anywhere on the rule. The rule shows extensive evidence of genuine long-term use, including edge rounding, surface wear, small dents and marks, discoloration and a deep, naturally aged patina. Please examine the photographs carefully, as they are an important part of the description. Age: Based upon its construction, marking techniques, typography and comparison with period wooden rules, I believe this example most likely dates from the late 19th to early 20th century, tentatively circa 1880–1915 . Because the rule is unmarked, however, its exact maker, country of origin and date of manufacture are unknown, and the date should be regarded as an informed estimate rather than a documented attribution. Provenance: This rule came from the handmade wooden toolbox of a serious longtime woodworker and antique-tool collector in Bath, Pennsylvania . His collection included numerous 19th-century tools, including a substantial number of quality English-made tools. This provenance does not establish that this particular rule is English or 19th century, but it provides useful context for how the piece was acquired and preserved. An interesting early measuring rule for a collector of antique woodworking tools, measuring instruments, rules, early shop tools or occupational antiques . Condition: Antique used condition with considerable wear and patina as shown. The markings remain substantially visible, although some—particularly near the 12-inch end—are worn or obscured. The rule has not been cleaned or refinished. It is being offered in its existing as-found condition. Condition: Used. Category: Collectibles › Science & Medicine (1930-Now) › Engineering › Drafting Tools. Brand: Unknown.
