Key Debuts and Story Milestones Larry Lance Dies Here: During the annual JLA/JSA crossover against the villain Aquarius, an energy ball forms that will kill Black Canary — pinned in place by one of Green Arrow's adhesive shafts. Larry breaks free of Aquarius's control and throws himself into it to save her. It is one of the genuinely consequential deaths of the Silver Age: not a fake-out, and not reversed. Black Canary Moves to Earth-1: Devastated, she leaves the Justice Society and relocates, joining the Justice League. That move set up the Green Arrow / Black Canary relationship that ran for the next thirty years and remains a fixture of the character across television and film. This is the issue where the whole arc starts. Neal Adams Cover — Long Miscredited: The credits index carries a note worth repeating: this cover was originally credited to Joe Kubert and later corrected to Adams. Two of the era's most distinctive draughtsmen, confused in the record for years. Behind the Scenes and Quirky Details Denny O'Neil Wrote It: Within a year, O'Neil and Neal Adams would begin the Green Lantern/Green Arrow run that dragged American superhero comics into social realism — the books that dealt with racism, addiction and poverty and that everyone points to as the start of the Bronze Age. This issue is from just before that, with the same two men on the same title. Red Tornado Appears , alongside seven JLA members and eight JSA members. Pencils by Dick Dillin, inks by Sid Greene, edited by Julius Schwartz. September 1969: This reached the racks about six weeks after Apollo 11 and a month after Woodstock. DC was still a fifteen-cent, Comics-Code, one-story-per-issue operation, and Schwartz's JLA/JSA crossovers were the closest the medium came to an annual event. Within two years the price would double, the Code would be revised, and O'Neil and Adams would have changed what a superhero comic was allowed to be about. Condition: FRONT Lower right — a network of hard-edged colour-breaking creases across the grey and black rubble field, the longest running approx. 1 1/4 in. Verified as physical damage rather than printing: the lines cross between the grey and black areas without interruption and are irregular and segmented rather than parallel. This is the defect that sets the grade — HIGH impact to the grade. Spine and top edges — fraying with small amounts of fibre missing, not merely worn — MED impact to the grade. Ink marking — a hand-written four-digit number, "1224", in dark ink in the grey field near the left edge. A previous owner's or dealer's stock number, not a signature — MED impact to the grade. Corners — all four blunted and softened with frayed edges — MED impact to the grade. SPINE Fold edge — whitening and fraying along the length, read from the flat cover — MED impact to the grade. Structure — not established. This copy was photographed without a raking-angle frame, and split, roll, wave and cover separation are all displacements perpendicular to the page — a square-on photograph cannot show them. Rather than claim the spine is sound, I am stating plainly that these four cannot be ruled out from the images taken. Ask and I will shoot a low-angle spine frame before you buy. Staples — appear intact and holding in the flat views — No impact on the grade. BACK Bottom-left corner — blunted with a diagonal crease — MED impact to the grade. Top edge — foxing and fraying — MED impact to the grade. Cream field — general soiling — LOW impact to the grade. Remaining corners — blunted — MED impact to the grade. INTERIOR Page quality — Tan to Off-White Pages — complete, no cut coupons, no tears, no writing, no water damage. Heavy tanning throughout; the paper flexes rather than cracks — MED impact to the grade. Staples — intact — No impact on the grade. Graded 3.5 Very Good− , range 3.0–4.0. An honest reader copy of a genuine key issue. It is complete, the staples hold and the colours are still reasonably strong, but the cover carries creases through the lower right that break colour, the paper edges are frayed with fibre actually missing, there is a previous owner's ink stock-number on the front, and the interior has tanned. One thing stated plainly rather than glossed: this copy was shot without a raking-angle spine view, so whether the fold has split or the cover is lifting is not established — I would rather say that than claim a clean spine I did not verify. Grading is my own opinion on a raw, uncertified book.
