Near one sterling silver cone, a single strand contains an intentional four-bead sequence of black, turquoise, turquoise and black. The individual artist has not been conclusively identified. Natural turquoise heishi, Red pipestone, Cream and brown shell heishi, Black onyx and/or jet. Striking vintage five-strand heishi necklace attributed to an unidentified Kewa—or Santo Domingo Pueblo—artist, beautifully composed in traditional Southwestern colors and materials. Five fluid strands feature carefully shaped and polished heishi arranged in architectural sections of natural turquoise, brick-red pipestone, creamy melon shell, brown shell and polished black onyx or jet. Narrow black-and-white spacers define each transition and give the necklace its exceptionally balanced, graphic appearance. Near one sterling silver cone, a single strand contains an intentional four-bead sequence of black, turquoise, turquoise and black. Its asymmetrical placement in the customary terminal area appears consistent with the Kewa tradition of incorporating a maker’s “signature bead” or identifying sequence. The individual artist has not been conclusively identified. The five strands graduate naturally for a graceful layered drape and terminate in elongated sterling silver cones with an adjustable sterling chain and clasp.
