The photograph has a decorative scalloped border with a few small bends and irregularities along the edges. Original circa-1950 black-and-white snapshot photograph showing the Michigan Avenue Bridge crossing the Chicago River in downtown Chicago, Illinois. Photographed from an elevated position on the south side of the river, the view looks north along Michigan Avenue toward two of Chicago’s best-known architectural landmarks: the white terra-cotta Wrigley Building on the left and the Gothic Revival Tribune Tower on the right. The photograph provides an excellent overhead view of the bridge’s roadway, Beaux-Arts bridgehouses, pedestrian stairways, Chicago River and surrounding downtown traffic. Numerous period automobiles, pedestrians and a large riverside parking lot are also visible. The Michigan Avenue Bridge opened in 1920 as part of Daniel Burnham’s vision for a grand boulevard connecting Chicago’s Loop with the North Side. Its four limestone bridgehouses were designed by Edward H. Bennett, with sculptural relief panels added in 1928. The structure is now officially known as the DuSable Bridge. Based on the automobiles and photographic paper, this image most likely dates from the late 1940s or early 1950s. This is a genuine period photograph, not a postcard or modern reproduction. The reverse is blank apart from a small dark inventory mark. Condition: Good vintage condition with light age toning, surface scratches, small handling marks, edge wear and corner wear. The photograph has a decorative scalloped border with a few small bends and irregularities along the edges.
