What a beautiful handpainted porcelain relish dish made in Japan by Noritake. What a beautiful handpainted porcelain relish dish made in Japan by Noritake. It is decorated in the Nippon style of handpainted flowers and leaves and a bit of moriage on the cream colored band with the white porcelain showing in the center. The bowl measures 8 & 3/4 inches from handle to handle and is 4 & 1/8 inches wide. It weighs 7 ounces and is 1 & 3/4 inches tall where the handles tip up a bit. It could also be considered a celery dish, or in my family, a dish for serving baby pickles! The green backstamp shows an M, inside a wreath, the word HANDPAINTED under the wreath, NORITAKE on the top of the wreath, and “Made in Japan”. The M stands for Morimura, the brothers who started the import business to the US in the late 1800’s that became Noritake. This particular backstamp was used in the 1920’s according to noritakecollectorsguild.info. This bowl is in excellent antique shape with no cracks or crazing but there is a SMALL CHIP on the side of the bottom rim where the bowl sits when put down, that can be seen in the last picture with a green arrow pointing it out. Looking at an angle to the light, I can see no marks in the glaze but there is rub wear to the gold on the handles and the edges, and to the thin gold line at the bottom the cream band inside the bowl.
