Overview A large, densely worked vintage crewel embroidery of a blonde girl in a bonnet and a rose-red dress, sitting on a branch in a blossoming tree with two small birds for company. It carries a stitched cursive Hummel signature at the lower left and sits in a gold-finish moulded frame with an ornamented black-and-gold inner liner. Key Features Hand-worked crewel embroidery in wool on a pale blue-green woven ground Heavily textured - satin, stem, French knot and bullion work, standing well proud of the cloth, especially in the blossoms and the girl's hair Girl in a rose-red flowered dress with a blue apron bow, a green bodice, white sleeves and white stockings, wearing a pink bonnet wreathed in orange and yellow blossom Two birds in the tree - one perched on an upper branch, one on a lower branch at the left Stitched cursive signature reading Hummel at the lower left, worked as part of the design Moulded frame with a gold finish over a warm ground, with a separate ornamented inner liner in black and gold Glazed, with the embroidery mounted directly behind the glazing - no mat Two triangle D-ring hangers on the back for wall hanging Outer frame approximately 9.5 x 11.5 inches; embroidery visible approximately 8 x 10 inches Condition Report Used, previously displayed and clearly displayed for a long time. The embroidery is complete and in good order - the design is fully worked, the raised stitching stands proud and is not crushed or flattened, and there are no missing stitches, pulls or holes visible in the photographs. The ground cloth is taut behind the glazing. The frame is sound and square. The gold finish is lightly rubbed at the outer edges and the corners, and the black-and-gold liner is complete on all four sides. The glazing is clear and unbroken. The reverse is where the wear is. The black backing board is torn open in the centre - a ragged patch of about an inch, with the pale board underneath showing - and there is a small punched hole toward the lower right. Both are on the backing board only; the embroidery behind the glazing is untouched. The two D-ring hangers are present, screwed down and firm, and the metal turn tabs all hold. Measurements are approximate, taken with a tape alongside the piece. Shipping & Policies Ships fast and packed properly for the journey - glazed pieces go out taped, cornered and double boxed.
