Beautiful antique Japanese Kutani porcelain chocolate/cocoa pot featuring an elaborate figural scene with traditionally dressed Japanese women, architectural and garden elements, raised moriage-style enamel detailing, rich iron-red decoration and extensive gold gilt accents. The underside bears a distinctive gold-on-red Japanese character mark believed to be a highly stylized/cursive Kutani mark. Based on the form, decoration and marking style, this piece appears consistent with Japanese Kutani export porcelain from the late Meiji to Taishō/early 20th-century period. Exact workshop or individual decorator has not been identified. The pot retains its coordinating original-style lid with ornate openwork finial and features a beautifully detailed openwork handle and elongated pouring spout. Condition: Very attractive antique condition overall. No chips, cracks, hairlines or repairs were observed during careful inspection. There is age-related wear to the hand-painted/enamel and gold gilt decoration, including rubbing and areas of decoration loss around the rim, lid, handle and lower border. Additional minor surface wear and age-related marks are present throughout. The interior opening at the base of the spout has smooth glazed edges and appears to be original to the manufacture of the pot rather than a break.
