The composition opens onto the Grand Canal and the San Marco Basin: on the right, the monumental architecture of the waterfront is animated by small, loosely sketched figures, while at the centre of the scene rises the unmistakable silhouette of the Basilica of Santa Maria della Salute , its domes standing out against a luminous sky. Several boats, including a sailing boat in the foreground, cross the waters of the lagoon, adding depth and movement to the composition. Rather than seeking a meticulous topographical representation of Venice, De Scolari concentrates above all on capturing its atmosphere: buildings, figures, water and sky seem to dissolve into one another through rapid, fluid and distinctly painterly brushwork. The palette is dominated by the blues and turquoise tones of the lagoon and sky , contrasted with the warmer ochres, pinks, browns and reds of the architecture. The outlines are deliberately blurred, while the forms are constructed through broad areas of colour and continuous tonal variations. The result is an almost dreamlike vision of Venice, in which light and colour take precedence over precise drawing: a pictorial language rooted in the Impressionist and Post-Impressionist traditions while moving towards the greater gestural and chromatic freedom of 20th-century Expressionist painting. The large original period dark gold-coloured wooden frame complements the tonal range of the painting and brings the overall dimensions of the work to 94 × 74 cm (approx. 37 × 29.1 in) , giving it a substantial decorative presence suitable for both classical and contemporary interiors. Osman Lorenzo De Scolari , born in Palermo in 1908 and active primarily in Florence, where he died in 1988, developed a distinctive figurative style throughout his career, working particularly in portraiture, still life and landscape painting. Among his landscapes, his views of Venice hold particular significance, allowing the artist to explore his interest in light, atmosphere and colour to the fullest. His painting combines Impressionist influences with the greater chromatic and gestural freedom associated with 20th-century Expressionism.
