They were importers of Limoges porcelain, so they had their own backstamp on the Limoges porcelain they sold. The back stamp is a distinct dark red crown overglaze identifying it as a custom order for J.McD. This is for an elegant antique porcelain Limoges teacup and saucer, commissioned by the elite luxury retailer in Boston, Jones, McDuffee & Stratton. They were importers of Limoges porcelain, so they had their own backstamp on the Limoges porcelain they sold. The back stamp is a distinct dark red crown overglaze identifying it as a custom order for J.McD.& S. Limoges, documented in the third edition of Mary Gaston’s Encyclopedia of Limoges on page 431 as being used between 1890 and 1914. This beautiful set is decorated with small delicate pink to yellow roses against a shadow foliage background with gold trim and a gold gilt handle. The style of this decoration reflects the late Victorian Era Aesthetic Movement, so this was probably commissioned before the turn of the century. The Aesthetic Movement of the late 1800’s (1860-1900) was a rejection of the Victorian stuffiness and the materialism of the industrial age and emphasizing the beauty of nature and producing beautiful art. This showed up in how they decorated china, and also in the design of furniture, houses, and more. The cup is 2 & 1/8 inches tall, 3 & 1/2 inches in diameter and the saucer is 5 & 3/4 inches in diameter. The cup holds 3/4 cup. The porcelain of the set is so fine and delicate, the set of cup and saucer only weighs 7.5 ounces! The set is in excellent condition, with no chips, cracks, or crazing. I don’t see any marks in the glaze of the saucer looking at an angle to the light. There is a bit of rub wear to the gold on the edges and the cup ring of the saucer. Please zoom in on pictures and see the 360 degree views on the video for a closer look.
