Whitbread’s New Plan of London, Drawn from Authentic Surveys. London, 1861. A striking and highly detailed mid-Victorian folding plan of London, issued by J. Whitbread and corrected to January 1st, 1861, with an additional printed date of February 26th, 1861. The expansive map provides a remarkably detailed portrait of London at the beginning of the 1860s, encompassing the rapidly developing metropolis on both sides of the Thames. Printed with attractive period color, with the River Thames prominently colored blue, major roads picked out in ochre, parks and open spaces in green, and important buildings and boundaries highlighted in contrasting colors. Among the numerous recognizable landmarks are Hyde Park, Kensington Gardens, Regent’s Park, St. James’s Park, the Houses of Parliament, Victoria Docks, and the dense network of streets and railways transforming Victorian London. The map is dissected and mounted on linen, folding into its original publisher’s embossed brown cloth covers, boldly titled in gilt “WHITBREAD’S NEW PLAN OF LONDON.” Particularly appealing is the survival of the original printed matter inside the covers, including “A List of the Principal Exhibitions, Places of Amusement, &c. of London” and a wonderful contemporary illustrated advertisement for Rowlands’ Macassar Oil, Kalydor, and Odonto. Condition: Map remains remarkably presentable for a large folding plan more than 160 years old, retaining strong color and excellent cartographic detail. Expected age toning, scattered spotting/soiling, and wear along folds and extremities. Interior advertising and informational leaves show considerable edge chipping, tears, losses and partial separation. Original cloth covers show rubbing and general wear, while the gilt lettering remains strong and attractive. An early handwritten “1861” appears on the interior cloth. An evocative 1861 street plan of Victorian London in its original folding case, retaining considerable period character and offering a fascinating snapshot of the capital during one of the most consequential periods of its nineteenth-century expansion.
