The artist at the decorating studio used several methods to make this stunning plate. The lovely white roses and their leaves, were applied by transfer on a pearlescent background that is overall a pale lavender, with deeper purple around the roses to highlight them. That pearlescent sheen shimmers and is so unusual. The winding green stems (with thorns on them) are also reflective. More detail includes small gold roses with a handpainted raised detail on them. It reminds me of moriage detail, but unsure if it IS moriage. There is a 3/8 inch band of gold on the edge of the plate too. Hidden on one of the leaves is the artist’s name, “Croquier”. The green backstamp under the glaze and was used from 1880 to 1918, according to porcelainmarksandmore.com. Zeh, Scherzer & Co. was founded in 1880 and manufactured a wide range of pieces from coffee and tea sets, other household items and tableware and decorative porcelain, like vases and figurines. Their products were so well made that by 1907, Zeh Scherzer began making some items exclusively for Geo. Borgfeldt & Co, a company in New York. Because Zeh Scherzer was so good at the decoration on porcelain, they opened their own art department in 1908, so it is likely this blank was decorated at an outside studio before 1908. By the late 1920’s the company had such a high-class reputation and it was named together with other famous German porcelain manufacturers like Hutschenreuther and Rosenthal. The plate is in excellent antique condition, with a bit of rub wear to the gold edge and a bit on the raised gold flowers. There is little wear to the rest of the design. The plate’s edge has a couple of bobbles in it, so the applied gold edge is a bit uneven there too. Looking at an angle to the light, I can see a few very light marks in the pearlescent finish. The plate is 9 & 3/4 inches in diameter about 1 inches tall and it weighs 1 pound. Please zoom in on the pictures and see the 360 degree view for a closer look.
