Vintage Murano Italian Art Glass Vase Pair A remarkable matched pair of vintage hand-blown Italian art-glass vases, attributed to Murano, Venice, circa 1960–1975 . These pieces are genuinely more beautiful in person than photographs can capture. Bands of soft turquoise-aqua, pink and opaque white sweep across each vase in tightly controlled, featherlike waves. The colored decoration is not painted onto the surface—it consists of separate trails of molten glass applied and manipulated while the vessels were still hot. The craftsmanship can literally be felt. When a fingertip is passed across the surface, the individual colored bands have a subtle tactile presence, revealing how the decoration was built directly into the glass. MURANO FENICIO DECORATION The pattern is closely related to the traditional Venetian fenicio , or combed-feather, technique. To produce this effect, the glassworker applied numerous parallel trails of pink, turquoise and white molten glass. While the trails and underlying vessel remained hot, a pointed tool was drawn through the colors, pulling them into alternating loops and rhythmic feathered waves. The vessel then had to be reheated, expanded and shaped without allowing the colors to blur or the applied trails to separate. The remarkably crisp bands seen here required careful temperature control, confident timing and considerable skill. Every curve records a physical movement made while the glass was molten. Although the two vases share the same colors, technique and overall design, their patterns are not mechanically identical. Each was created individually by hand. SCULPTURAL FAZZOLETTO FORMS After completing the decoration, the glassblower opened and manipulated the mouths into dramatic asymmetrical forms. The flared rims bend, rise and fold like fabric caught in motion. This type of sculptural profile is associated with the Murano fazzoletto , or “handkerchief,” tradition. The forms are especially reminiscent of the influential free-form vessels designed by Italian artist Fulvio Bianconi for Venini , beginning during the postwar period. These examples share Bianconi’s playful sense of movement and transformation of rigid glass into something that appears remarkably soft and fluid. Their pastel coloring and elaborate feathered decoration also relate to work produced by several Murano houses, including Venini and Fratelli Toso. No signature, acid mark or surviving factory label was found. The pair is therefore offered as unsigned Murano glass in the manner of Fulvio Bianconi , rather than as documented Bianconi or Venini production. A TRUE GRADUATED PAIR The matching glass colors, decoration, pontil treatment and complementary forms indicate that these were created as a related pair. Their graduated heights make them particularly attractive displayed together. One rises slightly behind the other, while the differently shaped openings create a lively sculptural composition. Because the decoration continues around every side, the pair can be displayed from virtually any direction. Placed near a window or illuminated shelf, the opaque white glass takes on a soft glow while the pink and turquoise bands become even more vivid. These marks remain where each vessel was detached from the pontil rod used to hold it while the opening was reheated, expanded and sculpted. The unfinished pontils are authentic evidence of the traditional hand-working process and should not be mistaken for chips or later damage. Because they remain sharp, the bases should be handled carefully when the vases are lifted or moved. CONDITION Excellent condition. Both vases are bright, clean and glossy with no chips, no cracks, no repairs and no noted flaws . The sharp pontil scars underneath are original manufacturing characteristics from the hand-blowing process. A captivating pair of mid-century Italian art glass combining traditional Murano technique, joyful pastel color and expressive sculptural form.
