Private Collection Antique Russian Rutilated Quartz Egg Pendant: The First Flower of Spring Within the clear body of this rutilated quartz egg, fine golden and smoky needles cross and gather in delicate irregular lines. Seen through the polished surface, they recall the tracery of bare branches at the end of winter, suspended in a landscape still quiet and without color. Against this natural drawing, a slender applied flower rises across the front of the stone, its bloom and pointed leaves set with rose-cuts. The effect is subtle but immediate: the first flower appearing before the branches around it have begun to leaf. The composition depends on depth as much as decoration. The rutile belongs entirely to the stone, continuing beneath the surface and changing as the pendant turns, while the jeweled stem follows the curve of the quartz above it. A warm gold mount and suspension complete the egg at the top, introducing another echo of the golden inclusions within. Nature provides the unpredictable lines inside the crystal; the jeweler answers them with a single ordered botanical form on its surface. Together they give the small pendant the feeling of that brief moment when winter has not quite disappeared, but spring has already announced itself.
