Antique Japanese Meiji Period Totai Shippo "Tree Bark" Cloisonné Vase This is an authentic, late 19th-century Japanese Totai Shippo (also known as Jiki-Shippo) porcelain vase dating from the Meiji Period (1868–1912). It features a highly collectible, deeply textured matte "tree bark" ground. Inlaid into the organic surface are brilliant, smooth cloisonné enamel fields depicting a songbird perched among pink camellias/peonies and lush autumn foliage, detailed with delicate brass wirework (cloisons). Geometric and stylized scroll borders trace the upper shoulder and base rims.Because cloisonné on a ceramic body was exceptionally difficult to fire due to differing heat expansion, this hybrid technique was only produced for a very short window of time, making surviving examples scarce and highly sought after by collectors of Asian antiques.
