The bronze has developed a rich dark brown aged surface with areas of green oxidation/verdigris, particularly within the recessed decoration. Antique Japanese Bronze Kōro Incense Burner with Shishi Guardian Lion Finial Offered here is a beautiful small Japanese cast-bronze kōro (香炉), or incense burner/censer, believed to date from approximately the late Meiji to Taishō/early Shōwa period. The kōro has a rounded body raised on three short integral feet, with small sculptural handles at either side. The body is decorated with raised relief imagery incorporating birds or animals among naturalistic foliage. Its most distinctive feature is the removable pierced lid. The lid is surmounted by an elaborate sculptural shishi (獅子), or Japanese guardian lion, sometimes referred to as a foo/fu dog in Western collecting terminology. Additional smaller figures and decorative elements are incorporated into the finial. The bronze has developed a rich dark brown aged surface with areas of green oxidation/verdigris, particularly within the recessed decoration. The interior also displays oxidation and residue consistent with previous use as an incense burner. The underside is supported by three simple cast feet. No maker’s signature or foundry mark has been located. This is an attractive example of traditional Japanese Buddhist/decorative metalwork and would display beautifully with a Japanese altar, butsudan collection, Asian-antique collection, or collection of historical incense implements. There is surface oxidation, verdigris, discoloration, patina, small marks and accumulated residue consistent with age and previous use. The interior shows substantial oxidation/residue.
