Description:  An authentic Japanese woodblock print by Kobayashi Kiyochika (1847–1915), one of the most important ukiyo-e artists of the Meiji period. Best known for his atmospheric landscape prints and innovative use of light and shadow, Kiyochika also produced a remarkable series of delicate bird-and-flower subjects (kachō-ga). This beautiful composition, titled Persimmon and White-eyes (柿に目白), depicts two Japanese white-eyes perched among the branches of a persimmon tree laden with ripe fruit. The vivid vermilion persimmons contrast beautifully with the cool blue background, while the delicate rendering of the birds, leaves, and branches demonstrates Kiyochika's refined observational skills and sophisticated use of color. The first edition of this design was published in October 1880 (Meiji 13) by Matsuki Heikichi in Tokyo. Although Kiyochika is particularly celebrated for his famous landscape prints, his kachō-ga works are relatively uncommon and offer a charming glimpse into another aspect of his artistic career.
