Up for sale is a beautiful, primitive copper pot that has been in our family for decades and very likely came from Italy. This antique copper hearth pot features an exceptional interlocking dovetailed seam (cramp joint) circling the entire base perimeter—a labor-intensive, handcrafted technique that firmly dates this piece to the 1800s or earlier. Tapering from approximately a 6" top diameter to a wider 6 ¾" bottom diameter, the body features a slight historical flare outward toward the bottom. This is a classic design used to maintain stability when suspended over open hearth fires or wood stoves. Height excluding the handle is between 5 1/8 to 5 1/4”. It weighs 1 pound 3.1 ounces and for its compact dimensions, this is a relatively heavy-gauge sheet copper pot, confirming it was built as functional utility kitchenware piece intended to withstand high direct heat. It has a wonderful, deep hand-hammered planishing finish across the surface and a rich, uncleaned aged patina.
