No attempt has been made to clean--there are a couple of tiny dark marks on the white background. Antique Floral Japanese Porcelain Cream Pitcher and Sugar Maruki Noritake Nippon Another lovely survivor from a time when good china was a luxury object. Beautiful hand painted gilt checkerboard pattern over floral sprays, with graceful handles.  The design looks French--and in fact it was after a visit to France that Nippon was set up in Japan to produce high quality porcelain for export. The bottom lining of the pattern is actually raised (as are some of the other details) before they were lined. This set is marked "Hand Painted" with a Maruki symbol in a circle and "Nippon". The last mark-'Nippon'-means it was produced and imported into the US before 1921! Background : The Maruki symbol was the symbol for the Morimura Kumi group of companies (which included the best known Noritake brand) and the 'Maruki' by itself was in use roughly 1912-1921. So it is with some confidence that this set can be dated to that period 1912-1921, which makes it "officially" antique (100 years old!).* This set is every bit as lovely as my mother-in-law's similar vintage Haviland porcelain! Light, graceful and you can shine a flashlight through it! Attribution and Dating : There are fake 'Nippon' and fake Maruki back-stamps--but these appear genuine for the following reasons: 'Hand Painted' appears in blue, open script in a straight line, the 'Maruki' symbol has the slight curve to the legs of a genuine stamp, and the 'Nippon' is the correct looking script, curved to the bottom of the circle enclosing the 'Maruki' symbol Condition : Very good used condition. Gilt on handle shows some signs of use but both cream and sugar show few other signs of use. No attempt has been made to clean--there are a couple of tiny dark marks on the white background.
