The palatial baskets, then often made of coin or sterling silver, would hold flower petals scattered by flower girls. Beautiful and Unique Genuine Authentic Vintage Antique  Victorian Silverplate Footed Bride's Basket / Cake Plate / Dessert Stand Manufactured prior to 1938 (see below) Flowers and Seashells Motif Decorative base with 4 Feet Heavy Sturdy Folding Handle / Bail with Decorative Design Makers Mark:  Pairpoint Mf'd C Quadruple Plate 1255 SIZE: Approximately 10" maximum diameter and about 10" tall (to top of handle, with handle upright) CONDITION:  From a recent estate - Good Vintage Condition with no dents or bends.  Handle is tight and folds or stands easily.  Natural Patina / Tarnish (I did not polish) - I do not know if it will polish out to a consistent brightness or smooth surface - please review photos carefully. SHORT HISTORY OF BRIDES BASKET: In the 19th century, a bride’s basket was the go-to gift. Extremely popular in the 1880s as a luxury gift for a bride on her wedding day, bride’s baskets were an elegant way to express beauty, love, and graciousness.   Bride’s basket is a modern moniker for something often referred to as cake, berry or fruit bowls or baskets. This made perfect sense, since those are the types of items one would expect to find in the baskets. Beginning of the Bride's Basket The baskets grew out of the popular wedding protocol of bestowing gifts of silver during ceremonial events, like a wedding — hence the name bride’s basket. However, before the baskets would become popular wedding gifts, they served important purposes, especially during lavish weddings during the early-to-mid 19th century. The palatial baskets, then often made of coin or sterling silver, would hold flower petals scattered by flower girls. The basket would also sit atop the wedding party’s table during the reception to display a bride’s bridal bouquet. Silver manufacturers saw the potential for a greater market if a bride’s basket was more affordable. This realization prompted many companies to use silver plate instead of coin or sterling silver. Glass companies saw the boom associated with bride’s baskets and acted: Shortly before the turn of the 20th century, glass bowls started appearing and were paired with the silver-plated baskets. SHORT HISTORY OF PAIRPOINT MANUFACTURING CORPORATION: Today the casual antique collector likely just knows Pairpoint as the lamp company that made puffy shades with fruit and flowers.  However, The Pairpoint Manufacturing Company actually dates back to 1880.  Long before they made lamps and shades they were busy making silver.  Below are some key dates in the company’s history. 1880 – Pairpoint Manufactoring Co. opened in New Bedford, Massachusetts.  They made silver plate items right beside The Mount Washington Glass Company.  Most of the silver was for use by Mt. Washington Glass. 1894 – Pairpoint merged with Mt Washington. 1900 – The Pairpoint Corporation is formed from the reorganization of The Pairpoint Manufacturing Co. 1907 – The company received a patent for “electrolier” lamps.  You will often see this mark “The Pairpoint Corp., Patented July 1907” on some lamps. 1938 – Glass and silver production ended at The Pairpoint Corporation.  The name was changed to National Pairpoint Company.
