Probably made in the 1960s, this beautiful and sculptural cheeseboard was made of genuine teak wood and not the cheaper woods or imitation woods that were (and still are) mass produced in The Philippines following the success of the Danish examples. Aside from Lego and its appreciation for living the good life, Denmark came to be known in the 20th century for its contributions to culture and especially modernistic design, of which simplicity and functionality were key elements. America gradually became beguiled by these concepts, especially after the 1954 Brooklyn Museum exhibition of Scandinavian design. These new ideas began in Denmark in the early 20th century partly as a reaction to the Art Nouveau movement. “Danish Modern” furniture, textiles, art, and all kinds of household goods and even consumer products such as mobile phones and cars, became popular worldwide. (In my first apartment, I not only had a colorful Scandinavian pile rug, but a chrome arc lamp that I thought was an example of the highest of chic design.) Probably made in the 1960s, this beautiful and sculptural cheeseboard was made of genuine teak wood and not the cheaper woods or imitation woods that were (and still are) mass produced in The Philippines following the success of the Danish examples. This cheese tray bears the name of the Danish company that made it on the bottom of the board: Benco. The teak has acquired a rich, deep color and a soft patina. I would put crackers on the flat surface and cheeses and dried fruits in the deeper section. It is in excellent original condition considering its age and usage. It only has a few very minor indentations in the wood. It measures 25 inches long by 7 inches wide.
