Being that they are made from a clay product there is varying anounts of shrinkage during the firing process in the red hot kilns at the factory.That area between the inner edge of the lid and the tabs is about a full inch. Yet most tanks are only 3/8th inch thick, so there is plenty of room to accomodate these variances, bigger or smaller.
