Item Overview: Up for sale is a stunning, authentic mid-century vintage Italian art pottery pitcher, handcrafted in Italy during the 1960s or 1970s. This is a substantial, grand-scale statement piece rather than the common smaller tourist jugs. Artisan Craftsmanship and Techniques: Every leaf and floral motif is physically hand-carved and incised directly into the white glaze layer using the traditional sgraffito technique. This process exposes the natural red terracotta clay underneath for incredible textural depth. It features prominent, beautiful interior throwing rings and lines traveling up the inner core, proving this was thrown on a potter's wheel by hand. The pitcher is finished with a striking, thick twisted-ceramic rope handle in a vibrant teal and green glaze, showcasing a rich mid-century palette of bright bold flowers, deep blues, and olive greens. Dimensions: The height is approximately 10.75 inches to the top of the handle loop, or 10 inches to the pitcher rim. The width and diameter are approximately 7 inches at the widest point, giving it a highly robust girth and presence. Condition Notes: The pitcher is in very good vintage condition with an incredibly vibrant glaze gloss and no structural cracks, major chips, or repairs to the clay body. The inside core is fully sealed and finished with a smooth, clear protective glaze over the natural red clay and features original white artisan slip and glaze drippings from production. True to its hand-crafted, artisan nature, there is a tiny, smooth glaze skip on the inner upper rim where the white base paint missed a spot during production, which is fully sealed under the original shiny clear factory topcoat. The twisted handle features a few minor, small vintage glaze flakes where the green top-coat has flaked down to the white under-glaze, but the underlying terracotta clay is entirely solid and unchipped. It features beautiful, authentic light age-crazing in the cream glaze areas, which is standard and highly expected for mid-century Italian majolica of this era.
