That means they are not new. I have noted the condition to the best of my ability. Some of my patterns have very fragile covers. Many of my patterns are over half a century old. Our home is smoke free, however my patterns are obtained from many places and I cannot guarantee they have always been stored in a smoke / odor free environment.
