A particularly attractive silver denarius of Caracalla, one of the most recognizable emperors of the Severan dynasty, struck at Rome in AD 213. The obverse features an exceptionally bold and characterful portrait, with Caracalla’s distinctive mature features, tightly curled hair and laurel wreath remaining sharply defined. Much of the surrounding imperial legend is also clearly visible, with attractive contrasting dark toning highlighting the devices. The reverse depicts Libertas, the Roman personification of liberty, holding the pileus traditionally associated with freedom and manumission. This reverse is specifically dated by Caracalla’s sixteenth tribunician power and fourth consulship to AD 213. A desirable later portrait of Caracalla with strong eye appeal, substantial remaining detail and an appealing ancient silver-grey tone. Minor edge irregularities, deposits and an ancient flan split are visible, consistent with the photographs.
