WWII Era 1940s Unsilvered Glass Christmas Ornament – Paper/Fiber Cap A beautiful surviving unsilvered glass Christmas ornament with construction and materials consistent with American WWII-era production of the 1940s . Measuring approximately 2 1/2" in diameter , the clear glass ball features a particularly attractive striped design with transparent turquoise/aqua decoration, a broad frosted translucent white center band, narrow red stripes, and cream/ivory accent rings . Because the ornament is unsilvered, light passes through both the clear glass and transparent colored areas, giving the decoration wonderful depth and allowing the pattern to change visually as the ornament is viewed from different angles. One of its most interesting features is the unusual tan paper/fiber-style cap with metal wire hanger . Paper and fiber caps are associated with American wartime ornament production, when manufacturers adapted to restrictions and shortages of materials traditionally used for Christmas ornaments. The cap on this example fits closely around the elongated glass neck and remains securely attached and does not feel loose . It shows expected age and has not been removed or disturbed. The ornament's unsilvered glass construction, painted decoration and paper/fiber-style cap are characteristics associated with American wartime ornament production of the 1940s . Corning was a major American producer of glass ornament blanks during this period, supplying blanks used by Shiny Brite and other decorators. This ornament is unmarked, and no specific manufacturer or decorator is being definitively attributed. Condition Very nice surviving vintage condition considering its approximately 80-year age. The glass appears intact with no chips, cracks or repairs observed . There is expected age-related wear to the original decoration, including scattered speckling and small areas of color/paint loss, light surface wear, and some irregularity to the hand-applied-looking painted bands. The paper/fiber-style cap shows appropriate age and surface wear but remains securely in place with its metal hanger. The decorative wear is visible in the photographs and has been left exactly as found. No attempt has been made to restore or alter the original decoration or cap. Please examine all photographs carefully, as they are an important part of the description and provide close views of the original decoration, transparent glass, elongated neck, unusual cap construction and overall condition. Approximate Diameter: 2 1/2" Ornament only – display stand is not included. Condition: Used. Category: Collectibles › Holiday & Seasonal › Ornaments.
