This small Japanese ceramic box was made in the ornate export style popular during the early 20th century, combining Kutani decoration with a Satsuma-inspired aesthetic. Beautiful vintage Japanese Kutani ware lidded box (kogo), likely dating to the Taisho to early Showa period, circa 1910s–1940s. This small Japanese ceramic box was made in the ornate export style popular during the early 20th century, combining Kutani decoration with a Satsuma-inspired aesthetic. The cream-colored body features a finely detailed scene of two green birds in flight among red flowering branches, accented with black, yellow and gold gilt detailing. The piece has an attractive aged crackle/crazed glaze that gives it wonderful antique character. Gold-tone detailing encircles the lid and base. The underside bears a Japanese maker/decorator mark; please see the close-up photograph. Traditionally, a small covered vessel of this form is known as a kogo and was used to hold incense, although today it also makes a beautiful trinket, ring, jewelry or keepsake box. Approximate Measurements: • 3” diameter • Approximately 1.5” tall with lid Condition: Very nice vintage condition considering its age. There is overall crazing/crackle to the glaze and age-related wear to portions of the painted and gilt decoration. Small surface marks and imperfections consistent with an older handcrafted ceramic piece may be present. No obvious major chips, cracks or repairs are visible in the photographs.
