This handsome and extensive set of mahogany dining chairs, dating from the 1950s and executed in the Chippendale Georgian manner, displays an unusually rich combination of carved detail, graceful proportions, and traditional English cabinetmaking. Inspired by the great eighteenth-century furniture designs associated with Thomas Chippendale and the Georgian period, the chairs have been conceived as a substantial formal dining suite, combining decorative splat backs, upholstered seats, straight Marlboro legs, and robust H-form stretchers. The chairs are constructed of richly toned mahogany, a timber intimately associated with the finest English furniture of the Georgian era. Its warm reddish-brown color and attractive figuring are particularly effective on the broad, sculpturally carved backs, where variations in the grain accentuate the flowing outlines. The polished surfaces retain a pleasing warmth and depth, giving the set the dignified appearance expected of traditional mahogany dining furniture. Each chair has an exceptionally decorative openwork back, framed by tall, gently shaped uprights. The serpentine crest rails rise and fall in graceful curves, terminating in carved scrolls and enclosing stylized foliate motifs. Below, the pierced central splats incorporate a lively combination of interlacing curves, Gothic-inspired openings, and carved foliage.
