Bohemia was one of the most progressive Provinces in the Hapsburg Empire, and its citizens heeded the Emperor’s call to modernize and industrialize in the nineteenth century.  It is important to know that at that time the population breakdown was approximately 40% German and 60% Czech with the Germans solidly in charge.  The language of the Province and the names of the towns were overwhelmingly German.  The spa town of Carlsbad was also at the center of rich deposits of china clay, endless forests and coal; all necessary elements in the manufacture of porcelain.  Porcelain factories opened early in the century, and their growth was helped by the establishment of local banks which fostered both savings and investment.  “Moses” Zdekauer, both a merchant and banker from Prague, established a series of pioneering companies, businesses and investments.  At his death in 1845, his sons inherited the businesses and continued them.  One of their investments was in a porcelain factory in the Carlsbad suburb of Altrohlau.  In 1884, the company suffered financial difficulty, and the Zdekauers purchased it, renaming it after themselves.  Their logo was their printed initials of M.Z. above a crowned eagle with the word “Austria” below.  The family retrained ownership until 1909 when they sold it to a German porcelain maker.  Since 1909, the company has changed hands, but kept the MZ trademark because it was so well recognized.  With the end of World War II and the wholesale change of national boundaries, the re-established country of Czechoslovakia expelled all Germans from its territory, and changed virtually all German town names to Czech names.  So today, the company once known as MZ is still in operation but now is named the Starorolsky Porcelan Moritz Zdekauer and is located in the renamed town of Stara Role in the Czech Republic. This exquisite gem of a small 8-footed bowl dates from c. 1900, and is painted in a pale green and gold with a ring of applied rose transfers.  The bowl would be equally useful to hold condiments, a sauce or sweets or just be the star of a cabinet.  It has a shaped base with a matching gold encrusted rim, with a textured and beaded detail near the outer rim with gold scrolls painted at each point.  There is also an applied ring of pink and white flowers around the sides and a green and gold design painted at the base.  The pink rose garlands seem to pop under the pale green and gold.  The colors on this piece are quite lovely and eye catching, especially for display. Although it is small in size, this bowl is highly decorated in a flamboyant manner which makes itself felt in whatever arrangement, table or otherwise, it is put.  It could sparkle in your collection.
