The original copper engraving was accompanied by 20 bookplates. The Washington family crest is adapted from the family coat of arms and features the phrase "Exitus Acta Probat," which means "the end crowns the deed." This bookplate appears in many, but not all, of the volumes so carefully collected in his library at Mount Vernon.
