The map opens to a very generous 25" x 40" and is drawn on a scale of 1:9,000,000. It was compiled in the cartographic section of the National Geographic Society and is dated December 1944. The map shows the boundaries of the various republics which then comprised the U.S.S.R., and it locates cities, towns, railroads, auto roads, winter trails, canals, and natural features. There are thousands of place names in this vast area stretching from the Gulf of Oman to the Arctic Circle and Japan, Korea, and the Bering Strait. International boundaries are shown "according to Russian treaties and claims as of October 1, 1944." Boundaries of January 1, 1938, are shown in red.
