Old 1970's Santo Domingo (Kewa) Pueblo Double Strand Graduated (4mm-10mm) Turquoise Heishi bead 14" Choker Necklace... TRADITIONALLY HAND MADE and HAND ROLLED ... with Center Pendant of 4 Polished Nuggets, and Coral Beads at Strand Ends. Strung on Cotton/Cotton Blend String. The String ends extend the Necklace length by 4" (for an 18" total), with a very simple Silver hook clasp. Turquoise beads have Natural Inclusions and Matrixes, and are most likely from the Cerrillos Turquoise Mines, near Santa Fe, New Mexico. ------------------------------------------------------------------ Traditionally, making Heishi beads by hand is a very labor-intensive process, taking almost two weeks to make a single strand. First, the Turquoise (and/or other gemstones being used) are sliced into strips and clipped by hand into small squares, drilled and strung on silver wire. The artist then turns this string of beads against a stone wheel to make them round. Finer shaping and smoothing are done with sandpaper, and then the beads are polished against a leather belt. Fewer artists today are cutting their beads by hand, making Genuine Hand Made Heishi Necklaces a valued piece of art to wear and collect. << Bit of Background >> Hand made Indian jewelry became a huge interest and fashion trend in the 1970s, driven by the back-to-nature, bohemian culture movement at that time. Everyone wanted one, but not everyone could travel to where the Indians were selling. My In-Laws, in their trek across the nation from East Coast to West, starting collecting many beautiful jewelry and accessory pieces at the various Indian Trading posts and Reservation stops along the way. Making great friends and great deals, they took these pieces directly to the consumer market at jewelry shows and craft shows. They continued to trade and sell over the next 3-4 years, before shedding the nomadic life and settling in Southern California. Recently, this piece (and others) were found tucked away in a box, now gently polished, and ready to find a new home! << Please check all pictures CLOSELY for your Best Condition description. These pieces were not used, only displayed. But that was back in the1970's so there may be flaws I do not see. I will do my best to take the pictures from all angles, so you can judge the condition for yourself, as well as try to describe any possible flaws I do see. It is possible that I might miss something, so please check all the pictures before making your purchase. Thank you! >> << Yes, I do COMBINE SHIPPING!
