He is wearing a classic military tunic with four pleated pockets and visible shoulder boards. The uniform appears to be standard issue. Prominently displayed on his left breast pocket (viewer's right) are two distinctive badges. One resembles a Wound Badge, Black Grade, an oval-shaped badge depicting a Stahlhelm (steel helmet) over crossed swords. Adjacent to it is another combat qualification badge. These badges signify combat experience or injuries. The reverse of the photo features handwritten German text "24.6.42" which clearly dates the photograph to June 24, 1942. The accompanying phrase "Abschied vom Nils" translates to "Farewell from Nils," suggesting a personal and poignant moment. A handwritten "9." is also present, likely an album notation.
