From my personal collection . 18” History : These beads are part of a broader tradition of stone bead production in the Saharan region during the Holocene wet phase (approximately 9000–3000 BCE), when the area supported more verdant landscapes and pastoral communities.  These beads, often made from locally sourced chalcedony varieties like brown agate, reflect early craftsmanship in personal adornment, trade, and possibly symbolic or status-related uses among mobile herder groups.  Agate was favored for its durability and availability in Saharan outcrops, with colors ranging from reddish-brown to darker tones influenced by iron oxides or other inclusions, sometimes appearing nearly black due to natural banding or patina from burial. These stone beads were hand-crafted through pecking with harder stones, grinding, and polishing, resulting in midly irregular contours rather than perfect symmetry.  Dark brown to almost black agate variants have been noted in strands from Mauritania or Mali, Comparable agate beads from Saharan Neolithic sites, such as those in the Aïr Mountains (near modern Niger-Mali borders) or Tassili n'Ajjer, date to 6000–4000 BCE and show similar production techniques, though reddish tones of agate dominate in documented examples. These beads were likely traded along early Saharan networks, alternating with materials like ostrich eggshell or amazonite, and buried and lost in settlements. Their Neolithic attribution is supported by archaeological findings 20” and ready to wear .  Condition: Used.
