I will rate each one separately. Let start with the one that has the most damage. This piece is in FAIR PREOWNED CONDITION. There is a crack around the entire body of the foo lion. These piece are solid porcelain and very heavy so it looks like it may have been dropped at some point in its life. This is how I purchased them. The crack is harder to see with the beautiful colorful detail and the glossy finish. In my opinion it still displays well. The second piece is in good condition with some crazing to the finish. They both have crazing. This second has minimal wear from age and use. They both have their original stickers at the bottoms that say Japan. Beautiful set even with the damage to the one. Vintage 1950s-1970s 🩵🩵🩵 History These are vintage Japanese ceramic komainu (or shishi), also commonly known in the West as Foo Dogs or Foo Lions.  They are mythical guardian lion figures rooted in Chinese Buddhist and imperial traditions (where they’re called shíshī), which spread to Japan (as komainu) and Okinawa (as shisa). In pairs, they traditionally guard entrances, temples, homes, or businesses against evil spirits, with one often having an open mouth (to ward off evil) and the other closed (to retain good fortune). One typically holds a ball (symbolizing the world or unity) under a paw, and the other a cub (protection/nurturing). History and Origin • Style and Production: These feature a distinctive turquoise/blue-green drip or “kochi”-style glaze with brown/black accents on the mane/eyes and a dark green base. This vibrant, glossy ceramic glaze was popular in mid-20th-century Japanese export ware (1950s–1970s or so), often produced in regions like Kutani (known for colorful porcelain) or for general export. The “JAPAN” sticker (paper label, common on these) confirms post-WWII export production, likely for the American/European market during the mid-century modern/Chinoiserie boom.  • They are not ancient or high-end antique temple pieces but decorative household figurines. Similar blue-glazed examples appear frequently in vintage sales from that era.
