This has been carved from either a piece of driftwood or a tree stump with part of the roots attached. The bottom of the statue's feet sort of grow into an uncarved area of rough wood. The statuette has been bolted to a wooden base to enable it to stand securely. AMAZING weathered wooden carved Chinese wise old man figurine.  This has been carved from either a piece of driftwood or a tree stump with part of the roots attached.  The bottom of the statue's feet sort of grow into an uncarved area of rough wood.  The statuette has been bolted to a wooden base to enable it to stand securely. This wise man may represent Confucius or Lao Tzu.  He is wearing robes that are nicely carved and look like they are flowing in with movement.  In his left hand he is carrying a basket.  Perhaps he was a fisherman originally.  His right hand might have originally held a fishing pole.  The face is very nicely carved. This 10.25 inch tall figure has been displayed outside and it has been weathered to a grayish tan color.  The wood is quite dry and cracked.  There are streaks of black lacquer (?) or paint remaining.  The right hand should be holding a walking stick, but there is no stick.  That same hand has been broken off and glued back into place.  The glue scar is much darker than the surrounding wood.   ***See photos for more details and measurements.  Feel free to ask any questions prior to bidding / purchasing.
