A rare antique Chinese porcelain chamfered square bowl, dating to the Kangxi Period (1662–1722) of the Qing Dynasty, circa 1700–1720. The sloping interior walls are densely decorated with trailing floral sprays of chrysanthemums, lotuses and peonies. A rare antique Chinese porcelain chamfered square bowl, dating to the Kangxi Period (1662–1722) of the Qing Dynasty, circa 1700–1720. The bowl is finely hand-painted in the highly collectible Chinese Imari palette, combining underglaze cobalt blue with overglaze iron-red enamels and finely applied gilt decoration. Chinese Imari porcelains were produced at Jingdezhen primarily for the European export market, combining the long-established traditions of Chinese porcelain manufacture with decorative schemes developed to appeal to Western taste during the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries. The centre features a pomegranate-shaped cartouche enclosing a finely painted garden pavilion with iron-red walls and a cobalt-blue roof, set beside a scholar's rock from which flowering prunus branches rise. Garden pavilions, scholar's rocks and flowering prunus are among the most enduring motifs of Chinese decorative art, symbolising refinement, longevity and the ideals of the Chinese scholar's garden. The sloping interior walls are densely decorated with trailing floral sprays of chrysanthemums, lotuses and peonies. The enamelling reflects the high standard of craftsmanship characteristic of Kangxi-period Jingdezhen porcelain: the iron-red enamels are applied in thick layers, creating a distinct raised enamel effect, while the flowers are enriched with finely applied gilt highlights. The central composition is enclosed within a single underglaze cobalt-blue line defining the flat well, while all four chamfered corners are symmetrically embellished with traditional ruyi-head motifs. The unmarked flat base displays structural characteristics consistent with early eighteenth-century Jingdezhen porcelain, including an unglazed edge with embedded kiln sand grit and minute firing iron spots resulting from traditional wood-fired kilns. The underside also retains old pencil inventory inscriptions applied by previous owners. More than three centuries after its manufacture, the bowl remains an impressive testament to the technical and artistic standards achieved by the Jingdezhen kilns during the Kangxi period.
