These beautiful opaque blue Bristol glass vases are hand painted with floral decoration of flowers and birds, typical Victorian designs. The vases are of hand-blown glass and lovely proportions. They have raised pedestal bases and bulbous tri-part knopped stems that support funnel shaped bowls finished with scalloped rims. These beautiful opaque blue Bristol glass vases are hand painted with floral decoration of flowers and birds, typical Victorian designs.  The vases are of hand-blown glass and lovely proportions.  They have raised pedestal bases and bulbous tri-part knopped stems that support funnel shaped bowls finished with scalloped rims.  The glass is a rich turquoise blue and opaque (light does not permeate the glass due to the addition of tin oxide or arsenic to the glass recipe). Hand painted in vitreous enamels, the designs stand proud from the glossy finish of the vases.  The vases have related opposed designs that signify they are a pair.  The foliage on one is a glossy peach pink; on the other, the foliage has additional gilding.  Rough pontil marks confirm they were hand blown, marks that indicate they were cracked off a pontil rod after completion. Both are in very good condition with slight paint loss consistent with antique age.  There are no chips, cracks or scratches.  The vases measure 8" H with 2 1/2" upper openings and 2 3/4" wide bases.  Each weigh a solid 10 ounces.  This type of decorative glass was widely produced in the Bristol area of England, the British version of fashionable French opaline glass.
