OLD VENETIAN FEATHER TRADE BEAD NECKLACE — COBALT BLUE, 13 INCHES, 24 BEADS A 13 inch strand of 24 cobalt blue Venetian feather beads, strung on aged natural fiber cord with a hand-knotted tassel. Beads measure approximately 1 inch long. All 24 beads intact — no fragments, no fillers. WHAT A FEATHER BEAD IS Feather beads — also called combed or fancy beads — were made one at a time by Venetian glassworkers. A cobalt core was wound on a mandrel, then lines of yellow, white, and red glass were trailed around it while hot. A pointed tool was dragged through those soft trails to pull them into the looping chevron and plume pattern that gives the bead its name. Every bead was tooled by hand, which is why the pattern runs differently on each one. WHY I BELIEVE THESE ARE OLD — AND HOW YOU CAN CHECK ME I am showing you the evidence rather than asking you to take my word for it. Close-up photos are included so you can judge each point yourself. SURFACE DEVITRIFICATION. Several beads show whitish weathering patches, fine surface pitting, and small burst bubbles where the glass surface has broken down. This is devitrification and it develops over decades of exposure. It is the single hardest characteristic to reproduce and there is no economic reason to fake it. See photos. VISIBLE HAND TOOLING. The drag marks left by the combing tool are clearly visible where the yellow and red trails hook into chevrons. The pattern differs bead to bead, the trails vary in width, and several show where the tool stuttered or the glass pulled unevenly. WORN DECORATION. The trailed lines are rubbed thin in places and lost entirely in others, consistent with long wear against skin, cloth, and neighboring beads. CHIPPED PERFORATION RIMS. The glass at the bead ends is chipped around the holes, with fracture edges dulled and rounded rather than sharp. Feather bead ends are traditionally fragile and this wear pattern is expected on old examples. ORIGINAL-TYPE STRINGING. The strand is on aged natural fiber cord — hand-twisted, cream colored, finished with a knotted tassel. This is African stringing, not a modern synthetic restring. The cord is old and I would not recommend wearing the strand without restringing it first. HONEST CAVEAT ON AUTHENTICATION Antique bead identification is difficult and misattribution is common in this field, including among long-established dealers. Venetian feather beads were produced across the 19th and 20th centuries, and reproductions of this exact type are still manufactured and sold today. There is no maker’s mark, certificate, or laboratory test that resolves the question for a bead like this. Age here is inferred from manufacturing method and wear characteristics — the standard approach, but inference rather than proof. My assessment: consistent with old Venetian feather beads made for the West African trade, likely late 19th to mid 20th century.
