Wonderful vintage handmade Sunbonnet Sue appliqué quilt, estimated to date from approximately the 1930s–1940s. Features a charming collection of colorful Sunbonnet Sue figures individually appliquéd onto a cream/white ground. The figures are made from an assortment of vintage cotton fabrics including pastel solids, florals, stripes, plaid and small-scale prints characteristic of Depression/WWII-era sewing. The quilt is extensively hand quilted, with dense geometric/diagonal quilting throughout the background and hand stitching visible through the appliquéd figures. Finished with a pink binding. A beautiful example of traditional American folk-art quilting and an especially charming display quilt. Condition: Good vintage condition overall with age-related wear. One Sunbonnet Sue figure near the upper edge has significant damage with several appliqué pieces detached/partially detached and hanging loose. There may be additional minor age-related wear, discoloration, loose stitching or imperfections. Please examine all photographs carefully, particularly the close-up showing the damaged appliqué. The damaged appliqué may be suitable for conservation/restoration by an experienced textile collector. Condition: Pre-owned.
