This is exceedingly special. For sale is an antique early 19th century miniature portrait on paper of a woman in a beautiful dress by the famed English silhouette artist Charles Herve. The reason I know it’s either by him or someone in his family are twofold. First, another portrait sold in the past with that attribution, and if you look at the style (See the male example portrait) , it is very similar in appearance stylistically. Not as exaggerated in the body but you can tell by the facial depictions, especially the way the eyes are drawn and the attention to detail that this is the same artist. Secondly, and much more importantly, there’s an antique address on the back of the paper with his last name on it, which, if you look it up, was one of the artist’s addresses. Overall, although you will find many of his silhouettes out there, which is primarily what this artist was known for, actual portraits from this artist are exceedingly rare. It’s too bad, really. I mean, just take a look at that woman’s dress, the colors especially. Speaking of women, although this may be hearsay, supposedly the Herve family was friends with Madame Tussaud of the famous wax museums. As for the frame, it is in an antique early 19th century Birdseye Maple frame, which seems to be in fantastic condition. It had an open back so I put a piece of white archival board on the back and then taped it up using archival tape that can easily be removed if you want. I was just trying to protect it from insects and such. Better to be safe than sorry is my motto. The size of the frame is 8 1/4 x 7 1/2. The viewable area on the front is close to 5 1/2 x 4 1/2. This glass is here. It does have a slight bubble in it so it’s definitely not modern glass. A fantastic item. Just bid! Condition: Used. Category: Art › Paintings.
