Offered for consideration is this beautiful blue-purple color-changing glass goblet manufactured by Moser Glassworks in what is today the Czech Republic (formerly Bohemia). Hand blown and then cold cut, the goblet is composed of Dichroic Glass : Glass that appears as one color in reflected light and another in transmitted light. Moser Glassworks is credited with creating the first colored glasses using the newly purified rare earth elements in the mid-1920’s. Leo Moser’s experimentation led to the discovery of how to produce glass with “mystical” color-changing properties depending on the lighting source. For example, Alexandrit is purple in daylight but appears light blue under artificial light. Moser was the first to register trademarks in this new colored glass, other makers were also developing their own lines including Frederick Carder of Steuben who created his Wisteria glass that has the same color changing property as Moser’s Alexandrit glass. The goblet is in wonderful, like new condition--there are no signs of wear and it stands 6 1/2" H. Rising from a round foot that on the bottom has a 1 1/2" polished pontil, the faceted 2 3/4" stem is attached to the bowl by a single knop at its base. The bowl measures 3" high, its everted rim opening measures 2 1/4" wide. There is a tiny seed in the foot but it in no way diminishes the extraordinary beauty of this piece of art glass.
