Saint Peter is shown holding his traditional key, while Saint Paul holds a book, representing his writings and teachings. Above the two saints is a smaller image of Christ surrounded by a dark celestial form. Traditional inscriptions appear above the figures. The icon is hand painted on a solid wooden panel and measures approximately 7" x 6". The surface displays extensive age-related craquelure, darkening, scratches, paint loss, small losses and general wear, giving the piece a wonderful old-world appearance. The reverse retains an older handwritten label identifying the subject as Peter & Paul and referencing the 19th century. The exact age, geographic origin and attribution have not been independently authenticated, so please use the photographs to evaluate the piece. There is a prominent dark/black painted or restored area across the upper central portion of the icon. Its age and purpose are unknown and it may represent an old alteration, restoration or overpainting.
