We are the original owners of this mug, and it was very gently and scarcely used over the years - used and washed when new, then on display in a cabinet for almost a decade before spending the last 3 decades in storage. For sale is one vintage Otagiri soup mug in a light speckled stone grey colour, nautically themed, featuring glazed white seagulls in flight on two sides, and an ocean blue loop handle. Brown handles are much more common of Otagiri pieces, but many of their nautical themed line often used blue. The seagulls are a 'raised' design of painting/glazing that is very typical of Otagiri pieces. We are the original owners of this mug, and it was very gently and scarcely used over the years - used and washed when new , then on display in a cabinet for almost a decade before spending the last 3 decades in storage. So while we do not have a definitive date of manufacture for this mug, we can give an approximation of 'middle-to-late 1970s'. This line of Otagiri ceramics was branded by using only golden stickers on each piece, as opposed to printing into or stamping onto the piece itself. The golden sticker, typically found on the underside, is long since gone unfortunately, as they often came off through washing. Mug opening measures approximately 4.5", and the entire mug height at 2.75". It holds approximately 12 fl. ounces. It's in absolutely beautiful condition. Clean, smooth, no discolouration or staining, no cracks or chips. The Otagiri Mercantile Company famously hand painted and glazed all of their designs, which often gave each piece its own unique details in brush strokes and colour concentration. Otagiri was making ceramics commercially from the 1950s through the early '90s when the they were sold to Enesco and promptly dissolved. Photographs show the actual item for sale.
