What a stunning example of an authentic, USA-made, collared 1970s vintage flower power maxi dress!  This dress was made by a historic US labor union which primarily employed women. It is estimated to be from the early 1970s, as it features many of the mod/flower power hallmarks carried in from the 1960s, plus the large collar which became popular as the decade entered the disco era! Celebrate labor history and historic unions this Labor Day weekend! This shirt dress is an authentic 1970's vintage garment produced by  The International Ladies' Garment Workers' Union (aka the ILGWU - notably featured in the Devil Wears Prada 2 on Andy Sachs' T-Shirt)! Condition Notes:   The dress is unwashed and unworn, new without tags. Some threads near the cuffs on the sleeves are loose, this appears to be a manufacturers' error. They could be tightened up by someone with basic sewing skills. The inside of the dress has many loose edges and threads, again this is how the dress was constructed.  This makes it seem like the dress is supposed to be hand-washed.  Dress Construction: The dress has a navy blue bodice with faux, contrasting cloth-covered buttons, making it look like a vest - but it all actually zips in the back!  The zipper is in great condition and works smoothly.  There are two hook and eye closures on the collar for a tailored fit. The dress has a gathered waist for the skirt, and there is a lining for the skirt. There are no shoulder pads. The sleeves are sheer and have button cuffs. The bodice has a V neck and darts at the bust. Materials: The navy blue bodice is a polyester, stretch knit. The sleeves, collar,  skirt,  and lining are a gauzey, relatively open weave, natural fabric, like cotton or rayon. This makes the sleeves somewhat sheer, and the layered fabric (at the cuffs and combing the lining and fashion fabric of the skirt) more opaque. Fit and Measurements (see photos as well): No size tag, would fit around a US Size Medium , approximately Women's 8-10. Waist: 15 inches flat, 30 inches around. Chest (lower armpit to armpit): 18 inches flat, 36 inches around. Top Shoulder Seam to Shoulder Seam: 15 inches flat, 30 inches around. Torso length (back of bodice to seam of skirt): 16 inches Skirt length: 37.5 inches! Garment Union History: "The International Ladies' Garment Workers' Union (ILGWU) was a labor union for employees in the women's clothing industry in the United States. It was one of the largest unions in the country, one of the first to have a primarily female membership, and a key player in the labor history of the 1920s and 1930s. The union, generally referred to as the "ILGWU" or the "ILG", merged with the Amalgamated Clothing and Textile Workers Union in the 1990s to form the Union of Needletrades, Industrial and Textile Employees (UNITE). UNITE merged with the Hotel Employees and Restaurant Employees Union (HERE) in 2004 to become UNITE HERE. The two unions that formed UNITE in 1995 represented 250,000 workers between them, down from the ILGWU's peak membership of 450,000 in 1969.
