PAIR OF ANTIQUE ORNAMENTAL DOOR HINGES - 4-1/2" x 4-1/2" - EASTLAKE / AESTHETIC MOVEMENT - ARCHITECTURAL SALVAGE A matched pair of heavy 19th-century American ornamental butt hinges, cast with dense Aesthetic Movement ornament: stippled grounds, fan and shell corner blocks, stylized scrolling foliate forms with dotted accents, and geometric block framing. This is high-grade builders' hardware from the 1880s, the period when American hardware manufacturers treated a door hinge as a piece of sculpture. WHY THESE ARE BETTER THAN MOST Most decorated period butts carry ornament only in a narrow band along the knuckle. These are ornamented across the entire show face of both leaves, plus the full length of the barrel, plus both finial tips. The reverse is plain where it seats in the mortise, but carries a decorative band flanking the barrel, the strip that remains visible in the gap between door and jamb once installed. Finished from every angle it will be seen from. At 4-1/2" square, these are sized for substantial doors. Large ornamental butts are meaningfully harder to find than the 3" and 3-1/2" hinges that turn up routinely. Both original finial tips are present on both hinges. Nothing is missing, replaced, or mismatched. MARKINGS Each leaf is stamped on the reverse: 4½ x 4½ 45 . The size is self-explanatory. The 45 is most likely the manufacturer's pattern or catalog number, since period hardware catalogs listed hinges by number and size. I have not identified the maker. Worth noting: the identical stamp appears on both leaves of both hinges. These present as original mated pairs, not two halves assembled from separate hinges. MEASUREMENTS Leaf: 4-1/2" x 4-1/2"  Photographed on a 1" grid so you can verify proportions yourself. MATERIAL The leaves and finial tips test non-magnetic with a strong magnet, consistent with a copper alloy. The hinge pin is ferrous. This is normal and period-correct for hinges of this grade: the steel pin carries the door's weight and serves as the wear surface, where a softer pin would gall and elongate. I am not certain of the exact alloy. Please review the close-up photographs of the unpolished reverse, where the true base metal color is visible. MECHANICAL CONDITION Both hinges pivot. Movement is somewhat stiff but neither hinge is seized. They have not been lubricated, freed up, or mechanically serviced in any way, and are sold exactly as they came out of service. I have not attempted to drive the pins out. The knuckles show no sign of previous hammering, reaming, or the other damage that turns up on salvaged hinges someone lost patience with. COSMETIC CONDITION - PLEASE READ These have been cleaned and polished. The original factory finish is not present. If you want untouched collector-grade patina, these are not that. If you're restoring a house and want hardware ready to go back on a door, these are exactly that. Expect: surface scratches, minor casting irregularities and slightly uneven edges consistent with period sand casting, machining and file striations on the plain reverse fields, some tarnish beginning to return, and ordinary wear from hardware that spent roughly a century in service. No mounting screws are included. PROVENANCE This hardware came to me from a Chicago-area source, and the collection is understood to have come largely from houses in the Hyde Park neighborhood on the city's South Side. I have no documentation tying these hinges to any address, and I want to be straightforward that this history is unverified background rather than a guarantee. What I can confirm is what's in front of you: the ornament, the construction, the stamps, the dimensions, the magnet results, and the condition, all photographed. PHOTOS Please review all of them.
