The knob hole carries a stepped collar. AESTHETIC MOVEMENT BACKPLATE, SINGLE One ornamented knob backplate in a good Anglo-Japanese pattern. A stylized palmette spreads across the head, framed by a Greek key band. Below the knob hole, a large radiating fan sits inside a chevron, flanked by diapered lattice panels and stippled grounds, with a banded border closing the foot. This is a designed composition rather than a repeating border, and the drawing is confident enough that it almost certainly has a catalog figure number behind it. Single plate. Sold as one. If you're hunting the mate, the pattern is distinctive enough to be worth watching for. CONSTRUCTION The knob hole carries a stepped collar. Keyhole is the standard skeleton-key profile. Four countersunk screw holes with raised bosses. The reverse is flat and unfinished with all relief on the front face only. MARKINGS A four-digit number stamped into the reverse. Photographed. MEASUREMENTS See photos, which are on a 1" grid. DISCLOSURES Polished on the face. Reverse is untouched. Reverse shows old finish, verdigris, and white residue as shown. Nicks and dings at the edges, most visible along the beveled border. Fine scratching across the polished surfaces. Ornament is softened at some high points. CONDITION Buffed, not restored. No replating, no repairs, no reproduction parts. Plate only: no knob, no spindle, no screws, no lock. PROVENANCE This hardware came to me from a Chicago-area source, and the collection is understood to have come largely from houses in the Hyde Park neighborhood on the city's South Side.
