As a young man, he also was interested in painting. Landscape. A man enjoy nature while meditating in a mountain retreat. Painted with ink and pigments on silk. Signed Chikuden and sealed. It is attributed to Tanomura Chikuden.   Tanomura Chikuden (1777 - 1835) was a Japanese painter of the Edo period. He is known for his depictions of nature, often melancholic in style. In the beginning of his lifetime, he had been planning on being a scholar of Confucius. As a young man, he also was interested in painting. He became a student of the bunjin-ga painter Tani Bunchō. Chikuden developed his style in a way that emphasized his gentle strokes and melancholy tone. His artwork usually included the subject matter of flowers, birds, and landscapes. Some light marks and foxing are present on the painting itself, otherwise the painting is in very good condition with age. The scroll mounting is in fine condition. It is accompanied by a paulownia wood storage box. Painting: 10 3/8” x 40 1/8” (26.5cm x 102cm) Scroll: 15 1/8”x 66 7/8” (38.5cm x 170cm) * Condition: Some light marks and foxing are present on the painting itself, otherwise the painting is in very good condition with age.
