This listing is for a beautiful bright red Bakelite Scottie with a black bow and collar. He is unique because he has a budging glass eye. I am not sure if he is from the 1930s or the 1940s but he is definitely Art Deco. The Scottish Terrier became very popular in the 30s in America and was the third most popular canine. It’s angular lines fit well on everything from jewelry to household items to clothing during the Art Deco period of the 20s 30s. It was most popular in jewelry that was reproduced in Bakelite and Celluloid. I was born during World War II in the 1940s and I have always been infatuated with that time period of costumes, hats, handbags, and jewelry. I purchased my Bakelite pieces at an estate sale and have kept them stored for years. I purchased them and stored them in my climate controlled smoke free home to resale after I retired and was on a fixed income. I have researched Bakelite jewelry history in order to sell this piece and my other pieces. I am not an avid collector of Bakelite or antique jewelry, so my knowledge is somewhat limited, but I love collecting all kinds of jewelry. This piece is still bright and shiny with no visible scratches. I am very careful to reveal everything that I see with my eyes or magnification. All of my pieces of jewelry have been tested and they are Bakelite. The pin brooch is approximately 1.75” L x 1.25” H. It was interesting to research Bakelite and Celluloid jewelry. I remember playing with my grandmother’s costume jewelry in the 50s and 60s, never thinking of it cracking or breaking. It appears that Celluloid was developed first in the mid-1800s from raw materials (wood, cotton, or other organic matter) and camphor. It was flexible, moldable, and could be used for decorating, cheaper than metals, but it was also brittle, so care was needed in manufacturing. In 1907, Leo Hendrik Baekeland patented Bakelite, an “art plastic”. It was made from phenol and formaldehyde. It was heat-resistant, scratch-resistant, moldable, and could be manufactured in a lot of colors. It could be craved or decorated and was cheaper than precious metals, thus perfect for costume jewelry. It is known for its durability, longevity and seamless design. Nevertheless, in the decades that followed the manufacturing of famous Bakelite and Celluloid jewelry proper care was not always taken, since it was in cheaper costume jewelry, and pieces still available today may have wear, scratches, oxidation, and cracking. I have not cleaned or polished the pin; it is still a beautiful vibrant red with no visible scratches but there is a spot on the back that appears to be a glue spot for the Scottie. During the early 1900s, manufacturers used the versatility of this new plastic to manufacture not only jewelry, buttons, household items (think radios), but many durable and stylish items. Many of these items or accessories are still fashionable and practical today. I am now retired and downsizing my own personal collection from over many years. All items are authentic and were purchased from reputable sellers. They have been carefully stored in my climate controlled smoke free home since purchasing.
